The Jacobsen History

In 1865, R.C. Jacobsen began reporting on the daily activity of the local slaughter houses in Chicago. Since there was no convenient electronic means of communication available at the time, Mr. Jacobsen rode his horse to Swift, Armour, Morrell, Hormel and others to speak with managers and brokers in person every day. After gathering his information, Mr. Jacobsen returned to his office and produced the Chicago Daily Hide & Tallow Bulletin on a manual typewriter and hand-cranked mimeograph. Known in the industry as The Sheet, his price quotes and commentary provided vital information to customers who otherwise operated in the dark about the activities of the Chicago-based meat industry.

Upon Mr. Jacobsen's death in 1930, Charles F. Becking took over the company. Mr. Becking was keenly aware of the value that The Jacobsen provided the industry and took calculated measures to safeguard the information from those who might seek to steal copies of the bulletins. He developed an ingenious code using combinations of words, abbreviations and phrases that were used to communicate market activity in the bulletins. A code book was distributed so that only paying customers could decipher the encoded information. The Jacobsen was quickly recognized as the only unbiased source for animal by-product news, and customers began using the price quotes as benchmarks for long term contracts on animal proteins, fats and hides.

In 1967, staff writer Albert Collins and two associates purchased The Jacobsen from Mr. Becking and later the Pratt's Reports from a primary competitor. Mr. Collins was able to take advantage of advances in technology to efficiently monitor market activity and collect perspectives from across the country. The arrival of the telefax enabled the company to not only provide faster service than previously possible, but efficiently expand the subscriber base internationally in time with the emerging global economy.

In 2000, The Jacobsen was purchased by By-Products Interactive, Inc., which began publishing the bulletins on the company's website. Additional experienced writers were added from competing agricultural news services and coverage was expanded to include new product categories, grade levels and geographies. The Jacobsen's foray onto the Internet is simply another step in the company's evolution, a continuation of a 145-year old legacy of objectivity and accuracy.
